ROOF has provided tutorial programmes in Moscow Orphanage No. 62 since the 1998-99 school year, though programs were suspended in mid-2005 due to lack of funding. (The program was previously funded by 2 private donors from Moscow whose total monthly donations came to $400.) ROOF is now looking for a new sponsor to cover the expenses of tutorials in Orphanage No. 62 ($400).
History and Short Description
112 children aged 10-18 (from 4th to 9th grade) live in Orphanage No. 62. These children have been diagnosed as having below average intellectual abilities and behavioural problems although many of them would be treated as perfectly normal in other countries.
They live two to four people in a room in a four storey dormitory building. Roommates are picked by common interest. Conditions are relatively spartan and the dormitory is in need of furniture. On each floor, there is a TV room with easy chairs and carpeting.

Children here study in classes held inside the orphanage.
Some kids have relatives in the city and siblings in other orphanages; they communicate with each other on the telephone a lot. After graduating from the vspomogatel'nii school inside Orphanage No. 62, they can go on to professional school. Many of the children in this orphanage have parents who have been denied parental rights. Children who graduate from the orphanage are given a room, some money and are followed by a caseworker until they are 18. (See about Orphanages in Russia). The children would like to have additional classes, tutoring in algebra, physics, chemistry and foreign languages, particularly English and French. ROOF is beginning to help the children to realise these dreams. All of the children at No. 62 study inside the orphanage, as No. 62 is classified as a internat with a vspomogatel'nii school.
